Boehner, Johnson Praise Small Business Committee Efforts to Highlight 41 Million Americans Without Health Insurance

Bipartisan AHP Legislation Addressing the Uninsured Expected to Move Quickly in Johnson Subcommittee

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- House Education & the Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner (R-OH) and Employer-Employee Relations Subcommittee Chairman Sam Johnson (R-TX) today praised the House Small Business Committee for its bipartisan commitment to examining the rising costs of health care for America’s 25 million small business owners and their workers, and for highlighting Association Health Plans (AHPs) as a comprehensive solution to those problems. A significant number of America’s 41 million uninsured citizens work for small employers who cannot afford to offer quality health insurance benefits to their workers. The Small Business Committee is holding a hearing on the issue today at 2p.m. in 2360 Rayburn.

Recently a bipartisan group of legislators introduced the Small Business Health Fairness Act (H.R. 660), including Johnson and Reps. Ernie Fletcher (R-KY) and Cal Dooley (D-CA). The bill creates AHPs, which allow small businesses to band together through associations and purchase quality health care at a lower cost. Both Rep. Donald Manzullo (R-IL) and Nydia Velasquez (D-NY), the chairman and ranking member of the Small Business Committee respectively, are original cosponsors of this legislation.

“Both Chairman Manzullo and Ranking Member Velasquez should be commended for highlighting the problem that small business owners and their employers face every day: how to access high quality, affordable health care,”

said Boehner. “Association Health Plans offer hope to the uninsured and represent a solution that can help millions of small business employees access the type of quality health insurance that their counterparts in large corporations and unions already enjoy.”

“Expanding access to quality, affordable health care is our top health care priority in this Congress. The need for AHP legislation is clear, and we believe it can significantly increase the number of Americans who have health insurance,”

said Johnson.“In the .”coming weeks, my subcommittee will hold hearings on Association Health Plans, and then we expect to move this bipartisan bill as quickly as possible so that people around the country can begin to have access to quality health insurance

The bipartisan Small Business Health Fairness Act currently has more than 80 cosponsors, including 15 Democrats. A broad and diverse coalition of more than 100 groups have endorsed the bill, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, the American Farm Bureau Federation, The Latino Coalition, National Black Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Business Roundtable, the Associated Builders and Contractors, the National Association of Women Business Owners, and the National Restaurant Association.
